Refugees, Immigrants and Morality

There has been much has been written on refugees and immigrants, much of it invective, this limits discussion and rationality. Thinking about this I was debating poststructuralist ideas and thought about how do we take people outside their comfort zone of normal narrative and force them to think in a new way, hopefully helping to avoid their own predjudices and maybe think of the problem and possible solutions.

Below is the start I have made to the project. It is made up of statements from newspapers, political theories, economics theroies, UNHCR website and ethical guides from various philosophers. It is not designed to be easily followed but designed to make you think.

After WW II, such was the naivety of the international community that it was thought that the problem of refugees was a small residue of that war and would be cleared up rather quickly. We start by assuming that the outcomes of any random event can be categorised into a number of states of the world. Late in the seventeenth century criticism of this outlook became vocal; and during the eighteenth century a number of thinkers developed views in which morality was taken, to one degree or another, not simply as suitably imposed on our nature but as an expression of it.

The standard response is to make a central limit theorem. The rout and the destruction of the passions, while a good, is not the ultimate good; the discovery of Wisdom is the surpassing good. Many objects, natural or artificial, have their particular aretê or kind of excellence. It is concerned with many other actions as well, with emotions and emotional reactions, choices, values, desires, perceptions, attitudes, interests, expectations and sensibilities. It is evident which sort of thing, among things capable of otherwise, is by nature; and which is not but is legal and conventional, assuming that both are equally changeable. The central limit theorem applies only in the limit, as the sample size tends to infinite.

Examining utility-maximising choices among contingent commodities proceeds formally in much the same way we analysed choices previously. States retained final authority as to who was recognised as a legal refugee and thus who was to be granted temporary or permanent entrance to the country. I believe there are other, and perhaps considerably stronger, reasons for adopting this conception of “utility” for purposes of a utilitarian ethical theory, arising from conceptual difficulties in the alternative theory; but that is a different matter, unrelated to the psychological theory of benevolence.

Stateless people may have difficulty accessing basic rights such as education, healthcare, employment and freedom of movement. Man is made by his belief. The most common way to model behaviour under uncertainty is to assume that individuals seek to maximise the expected utility of their actions. The grounds upon which “this” world has been designated as apparent establish rather it’s reality – another kind of reality is absolutely undemonstrable. A subset or part of a sequential game that begins at a node where each player knows every action of the players that moved previously at every point.

The insistence, most clearly in the Enquiry, that true statements come in two forms, “relations of ideas” and “matters of fact”. Your current approach is discouraged, rather than forbidden, by banks. For I knew that men would not believe that any of your more brutal acts were done with my consent, seeing that I have for my witnesses. All games have the same basic components: players, strategies, payoffs, and an information structure. Their sovereignty is not absolute but restricted. While not entirely disregarding the role of international norms in conditioning the identities and interests of states, Katzenstein draws attention to the internal, domestic determinants of national policies. The moral virtues belong to the contemplative life as a predisposition.

It is no longer a moral issue, it is a rights issue.

Two things fill the heart with ever renewed and increasing awe and reverence, the more often and the more steadily we meditate upon them: the starry firmament above and the moral law within. Man possesses the ability to construct languages capable of expressing every sense, without having any idea how each word has meaning or what its meaning is – just as people speak without knowing how the individual sounds are produced. A series of interrelated drivers of change is leading to the integration of the world economy.

The representation of an objective principle, insofar as it is necessitating for a will, is called a command (of reason), and the formula of the command is called an imperative. Waiters and shop-walkers looked you in the face and treated you as an equal. It is, indeed a character trait—that is, a disposition which is well entrenched in its possessor, something that, as we say “goes all the way down”, unlike a habit such as being a tea-drinker—but the disposition in question, far from being a single track disposition to do honest actions, or even honest actions for certain reasons, is multi-track. He concludes that these differences are attributable to different practices that generate different conceptions of the virtues.

The correlation coefficient may indicate that two variables are associated with one another, but it does not give any idea of the kind of relationship involved. Therefore I give you still another thought, which is yet purer and more spiritual: In the Kingdom of heaven all is in all, all is one, and all is ours. In every age and country of the world men must have attended to the characters, designs, and actions of one another, and many reputable rules and maxims for the conduct of human life, must have been laid down and approved of by common consent.
It should not be forgotten that most international law, to the extent that it is adjudicated at all, is treated in national courts. For tacit collusion to sustain super-competitive profits, firms must be patient enough that the loss from a price war in future periods to punish undercutting exceeds the benefit from undercutting in the current period. We are not racist but we see no solution. If macropolitical institutions and practices are founded on micropolitical practices, this does not mean that the goals of macropolitical are simply those of micropolitical constituents writ large.
The term democracy means rule of the people, but such a concept has created real problems for those who believe that political theory should be value-free in character. Each one is morally bound to regard the good of any other individual as much as his own, except in so far as he judges it to be less, when impartially viewed, or less certainly knowable or attainable by him. Reality is compared with propositions.
More than a million migrants and refugees crossed into Europe in 2015, sparking a crisis as countries struggled to cope with the influx, and creating division in the EU over how best to deal with resettling people.Would we converge or would there always be the possibility of some non-rationally-explicable difference in our desires even under such conditions. Those who have completely controlled their senses and are of even mind under all conditions and thus contemplate the Imperishable, the Ineffable, the Unmanifest, the Omnipresent, the Incomprehensile, the a Eternal – they, devoted to the welfare of all beings, attain Me alone and none else.
In light of social and material changes brought about by the globalisation of products and finance, the movement of peoples, the rise of indigenous peoples and sub-national groups, environmental degradation and so on, the “viability and accountability of national decision-making entities” is being brought into question. The process of leading men’s thought and imagination away from the use of force will be greatly accelerated by the abolition of the capitalist system, provided it is not succeeded by a form of State Socialism in which officials have enormous power.
When considering alternatives models with the same specification of the dependent variable, the selection procedure is straightforward. News, for example, is gathered, selected and controlled by Western corporations, as a commodity for profit, rather than a means of development. Thus, then we have arrived, within the moral cognition of common human reason, as its principle, which it admittedly does not think so abstractly in a universal form but which it actually has always before its eyes and uses as a norm for its appraisals.
In international affairs the same formula of federalism will apply: self-determination for every group in regard to matters which concern it much more vitally than they concern others, and government by a neutral authority embracing rival groups in all matters in which conflicting interests of groups come into play; lout always with the fixed principle that the functions of government are to be reduced to the bare minimum compatible with justice and the prevention of private violence.
